Panini America Announces Digital Cards with Blockchain :

Panini America is once again upping
the game in the trading card world.
The largest licensed sports and entertainment collectibles
company announced Thursday it will soon
introduce blockchain-backed officially licensed digital trading cards.
Coming in early January, the trading cards will feature 100 athletes
and will incorporate the National Treasures design.
Honus Wagner, Mickey Mantle, Barry Sanders,
Patrick Mahomes,Lamar Jackson, Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge
and Zion Williamson are among the athletes that will be shown.
The one-of-one cards will be abailable for auction
on Panini’s website, with 10 cards auctioned at a time.
The backing of blockchain ensures each card’s legitimacy
and provides an unabridged digital record of the card.
“We have spent years researching and exploring the best possible
way to incorporate blockchain into our trading cards
as another level of authentication as well as the best way
to introduce blockchain to sports fans and collectors,
” Mark Warsop, CEO of Panini America, said in a press release.

Users who purchase a digital card will also receive
a one-of-one physical version of that card.
The physical version features an autograph and,
in some cases, a piece of memorabilia.
“The blockchain asset will be an exact representation
of the physical version of the card,” the press release states.
It’s an initiative idea that could be the future of trading cards.
Per its press release, Panini has plans for blockchain
versions of cards from upcoming NFL, NBA and MLBPA products.
“A number of factors were considered in selecting the players
that will be released in our Panini trading cards
that utilize blockchain technology,” Warsop added.
“There is not a more iconic trading card than
the rare 1909-11 Honus Wagner T206 baseball card.
To be able to produce the first ever Honus Wagner blockchain card,
along with all of these other players utilizing blockchain technology
and ensuring that these cards will now live forever
in the digital realm, is truly an honor.”

Each Blockchain card will open for bidding in a Dutch
Auction format with a starting price of $100,000.
Card prices will drop incrementally until the card is sold.

2019 Panini Blockchain National Treasures brings
licensed sports cards to the world of crypto-collectibles.
The multi-sport set combines the high-end National Treasures
card brand with Panini's own private blockchain.
The initial buyers receive both a digital and physical
card that is each a one-of-one collectible.

Exclusive to Panini's online store, 2019 Panini Blockchain National Treasures
features 100 cards from some of the biggest names across multiple sports.
It seems that all cards showcase a signature, many are signed
on-card, and nearly all the cards contain a quality relic piece, as well.
How Panini Blockchain Works
As most collectors are aware, all of this
is pretty standard for the NT brand.
The difference for 2019 Panini Blockchain National Treasures
is that each card comes in two forms.
The physical version listed as a gift with purchase appears
to be the same as any other National Treasures card
except for the added Panini Blockchain logo.
Collectors are mainly buying a digital version
that is stored on the Panini Blockchain.
Per Panini, the main appeal of this format
is that it offers collectors the "highest degree of legitimacy
for the digital collectible they own
and proof of ownership." Going further, "The blockchain can also
serve as a digital ledger tracking ownership of a blockchain asset
by creating a new chain every time there
is a new transaction related to that asset.
The unique public facing Blockchain identifier ensures
your digital asset cannot be duplicated, faked, or disputed."
Essentially, the digital card promises full
provenance and proof the card is yours.
Plus, there is an automatic record for any
transactions tied to the card via the "Listing History."
It is important to note that these cards can only be purchased
with US dollars and there is currently no way
to remove the digital card from Panini's "private-closed" blockchain.
For a fee, cards can be traded, auctioned or resold
within the closed blockchain via "Public Auctions."
Panini also makes it a point to distance the concept
from popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether.

Where to Buy Panini Blockchain
2019 Panini Blockchain National Treasures
is only available directly from Panini.
Starting January 6, each week brings
10 new cards that are all one-of-one editions.
The cards are sold through a "Dutch Auction" format.
In this case, each card starts at $100,000
and the price drops until every card is sold.
The price decreases a small amount every five minutes
and continues to dip in price for as many
as four days until the card sells.
In theory, the price can drop all the way to $0.01,
but that won't happen.
Although these online cards are the only option
initially, Panini plans to offer blockchain cards
in future physical sets for NBA, NFL and MLBPA.
