Most trading card products strive to deliver, at the least, that one go-to move
a calling-card staple that, with just a few tweaks from year to year, keeps collectors intrigued season
after season after season.
Panini America’s Excalibur franchise, however, has two such defining staples : The colorful, Prizm-powered Crusade chase
and the explosive, one-per-case Kaboom! insert.
In late June, both of those popular brand tenets — along with a few new revelations
return with full force in 2016-17 Excalibur.
On average, each hobby box (eight cards per pack, 20 packs per box, 16 boxes per case)
will deliver 10 Crusade inserts, two autographs and one memorabilia card.
The highlights of 2016-17 Panini Excalibur are many and include . . .
- The Crusade continues with base Silver, Blue (numbered to 149), Red (numbered to 99), Purple (numbered to 49),
Orange (numbered to 25), Gold (numbered to 10) and Black (numbered to only one) versions.
- The wildly popular, one-per-case Kaboom! insert returns with original artwork featuring the game’s biggest superstars.
- The new Apprentice Signature Shield insert includes both an autograph and a piece of memorabilia from members of the 2016 NBA Draft Class.
- Mix and match your favorite player combinations with the new Jousting chase that delivers both left and right card designs.
- The Calligraphy insert showcases autographs of young stars from today along with some of the NBA’s all-time greats.

Offering the last retail issue for the '16-17 NBA collecting year, 2016-17 Panini Excalibur applies
the medieval brand to top stars of the sport.
Hobby boxes include two autographs and one relic and there are also several retail formats,
each with exclusive elements.
he annual quest for NBA cards is a long and memorable one for many collectors, filled with a multitude of treasures
and long journeys toward finding the perfect card of a favorite player.
With the upcoming 2016-17 Panini Excalibur product, the hunt will take
a few twists and turns that could end in a Kaboom!
Released in late June as the 2017 NBA Finals are approaching their conclusion,
Excalibur will come with both a hobby and retail configuration that includes fat packs and blaster boxes.
Hobby boxes will have two autographs and a memorabilia card inside.
2016-17 Panini Excalibur Base / Inserts
Sporting a new design, the 2016-17 Panini Excalibur checklist incorporates full-bleed action shots
into the base set with 200 cards to collect.
Technically an insert, Crusade cards (1:2 packs) supply the more popular "base" set with Opti-Chrome technology
and various parallel colors.
Choices include base Silver along with Blue (#/149), Red (#/99), Purple (#/49), Orange (#/25), Gold (#/10), and Black (1/1) versions.
Carrying over the top option from the 2015-16 product, Kaboom! features
an original illustrated interpretation of NBA superstars that has the look of heroes in a comic book.
These average one per case.
Jousting is a new insert that offers a mirror design with a left and right focus for notable players.
There are no early details regarding the base set or any parallels for 2016-17 Panini Excalibur .
2016-17 Panini Excalibur Autographs / Relics
16-17 Panini Excalibur also brings the hits with an expected hobby box yield of two autographs
and one memorabilia card.
On the signed side, Calligraphy showcases current and retired players while Apprentice Signature Shield debuts
with auto-relic cards from the 2016 rookie class.
In lieu of base set details, however, there was some information about the always-popular Crusade inserts printed
on Optichrome stock that come 10 times per hobby box.
There appears to be seven levels of scarcity for them which begins with a Silver version.
From that point, all of the other parallels are numbered as well and the roster includes Blue (/149),
Red (/99), Purple (/49), Orange (/25), Gold (/10) and the one-of-one Black. Look for three Camo parallels inside fat packs.
New to the insert lineup in 2016-17 Panini Excalibur is Jousting!, a set which allows collectors to make up fantasy combinations
of players as there are designs where a player faces left or right.
Blaster boxes will have an insert collection dubbed Storm The Castle and those cards are expected to have Purple
and Blue parallel versions while the fat packs are slated to have a set called Coat of Arms.
The real draw for those busting open Excalibur may be the returning Kaboom! inserts.
A case hit which typically performs well on the secondary market due to scarcity and visual appeal,
they are sure to be hot once again thanks to a traditionally strong checklist.
Autographs and Memorabilia
A pair of autograph collections were teased for 2016-17 Panini Excalibur.
