The fabled NBA Hoops Basketball brand isn’t so much a trading card product as it is a basketball collecting institution.
It’s a vital, vibrant reminder of the impending new season, brimming every fall with promise, pageantry,
potential and star power.
For most collectors, basketball season isn’t really basketball season until NBA Hoops arrives.
And now that last week’s 2016 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot has come and gone, that means were one huge step closer
to a new NBA Hoops arrival.
Set to release in mid-October, 2016-17 NBA Hoops will deliver the first true Rookie Cards
featuring members of the 2016 NBA Draft Class.

But the year’s first RCs are just the beginning. 2016-17 NBA Hoops has so much more in store, including . . .
Hobby-exclusive Hot Signatures, Red Hot Signatures (numbered to 25), Hot Signatures Rookies
and Red Hot Signatures Rookies (numbered to 25) autograph sets.
The Hot Signatures checklist includes the likes of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and Andrew Wiggins.
The return of the comprehensive Road to the Finals chase that documents the epic run of the Cleveland Cavaliers
to the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
While many of the NBA card brands of today can't trace their history to the first big push for basketball cards,
Panini's 2016-17 NBA Hoops carries on a cardboard legacy with another early-season set.
Each hobby box includes two autographs and multiple inserts.
Kicking things off for the product, 2016-17 NBA Hoops features the first official rookie cards
for the top names in the 2016 NBA Draft.
Obviously, veterans are also included in the base set along with multiple parallels.
Exclusive to hobby, Hot Signatures and Red Hot Signatures (#/25) are the main signed insert in 2016-17 NBA Hoops .
The two sets include early autographs for the first-year players along with other key NBA subjects.
Inserts are plentiful in 2016-17 NBA Hoops and led by the return of Road to the Finals.
This set documents the '15-16 championship battle between the Cleveland Cavaliers
and Golden State Warriors.
Hobby-exclusive inserts such as Dreams, Bird’s Eye View, High Flyers, Courtside
and Team Leaders; each insert is paralleled by Artist Proof (numbered to 25) and Gold (numbered to 10) versions.
Hobby boxes (12 cards per pack, 24 packs per box) that deliver, on average, two autographs, 24 inserts or parallels
and three Kobe 2K inserts. (You can also find exclusive Kobe 2K cards inserted into NBA 2K videogames).
A robust retail presence that includes exclusive content such as Rise N Shine memorabilia cards,
Great Significance autographs, Lights Camera Action, Faces of the Future, End 2 End, Swat Team and more.
The now-retired Lakers legend Kobe Bryant is honored with Kobe 2K (1:8 packs) inserts.
Other inserts are only found in hobby formats, such as Bird's Eye View, Courtside, Dreams,
High Flyers and Team Leaders.
Artist Proof (#/25) and Gold (#/10) parallels apply rarity to each of these insert choices.

Unique retail parallels including Blue (numbered to 75) and Red (numbered to 15) Checkerboard cards in Retail,
Blue and Red (numbered to 49) cards in Blasters, Teal (numbered to 49)
and Orange (numbered to 25) cards in Gravity Feeds, and Teal Explosion
and Orange Explosion (numbered to 75) in in Fat Packs.
For many basketball card collectors, they were likely first introduced to the pleasure
this hobby has to offer through the long-standing Hoops brand.
Since the 1989-90 season, it has been a great place to find affordable rookie cards
and a base set that digs deep into team rosters.
In the case of 2016-17 Hoops, the treasured feeling of breaking open a pack loaded up
with cards is augmented by a hit of some form along with a couple of autographs inside the box.
Releasing just before the new season begins, there will be plenty of freshman content courtesy of Panini America
and even some of the summer’s hottest free agents in their new uniforms.
Base Set and Parallels
Collectors have come to expect a large and comprehensive base set in Hoops
and while Panini has not dropped specific details regarding its size in 2016-17
it should top 300 cards if it stays true to recent editions.
The latest members of the NBA fraternity will have their first rookie cards in their team colors
and should include several standouts along with the occasional dark horse talent that rises to prominence in time.
Parallel versions of the 2016-17 Hoops set are not known at this time, but expect to find
a strong mix that can potentially include foil variations, shiny fronts, or serial numbering.
Inserts
One thing that always seems to add value for those breaking Hoops
is the strong selection of insert cards that can be pulled from packs.
This season, several favorites return including Courtside, which is highly regarded for its strong action photography.
Road to the Finals covers not only Cleveland’s run to its first NBA crown, but also every playoff game,
and could be tiered once again like in previous seasons.
Each box will also contain three Kobe 2K insert cards, which pay tribute to the recently-retired Kobe Bryant.
Other inserts exclusive to hobby packs of 2016-17 Hoops include Bird’s Eye View, Dreams,
High Flyers, and Team Leaders.
All of the inserts have Artist Proof and Gold parallels numbered to 25 or 10, respectively.
Autographs
With two autograph cards to be pulled from an average box of 2016-17 Panini NBA Hoops,
there is likely to be a strong mix of young prospects along with the occasional bit of star power.
Hot Signatures are going to see some big names on the checklist while Hot Signatures Rookies focus on the 2016 draft class.
Both of these sets have a Red Hot parallel numbered out of 25.
